Run by award winning Kodiak Photo Workshop - Outex and Think Tank Photo ambassador Dan M Lee. Every bear viewing spot provides a distinctive perspective into the daily lives of these majestic creatures, showcasing the splendor of Kodiak Island. Come and create stunning visual imagery and work alongside Dan as he will show you the beauty of Kodiak Island. From Wildlife photography, landscape and editorial photography, you will have an opportunity to try your hand at capturing images from a large array of wild subjects. Receive photography coaching and learn new skills. Therefore you are guaranteed an exclusive and unique experience as our group is small and the only one in the area, we will have the best possible bear photography experience while minimizing the impact and disturbance to the bears. Bears can get accustomed to humans quickly and by making the groups small we can manage and limit the contact bears have with outside influences. This means we truly see bears as they are meant to be, wild ! We take no more than eight clients at a time to one of our bear viewing locations throughout Karluk Lake, plus we have permission to explore some native land. The O’Malley River, nestled between two significant salmon spawning lakes, is a brief yet shallow watercourse that presents optimal feeding opportunities for bears. Notably, the bear feeding area along the river is the sole section within the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge restricted to the public. Accessing the O’Malley River proves to be one of our more challenging bear viewing experiences due to its rugged, brushy, and uneven trails. Consequently, we limit visits to days with favorable weather conditions, ensuring a safe and rewarding adventure for our guests. What to Bring

about KBBC
EXCELLENT Based on 52 reviews HellyMbro2024-07-23Verified Fabulous !! Words fail me to be honest. What an experience!! Pretty much perfect. The island is beautiful. The lodges are comfortable & well planned with fabulous view. The staff are all so lovely. The food is delicious. The bear spotting just amazing! We saw multiple bears on every trail walk at close range but felt safe & informed with the brilliant guides, CJ & Fallon. There’s a gorgeous little fox who comes to visit & deer walking around too. It’s just so tranquil & pretty. Good for the soul !! We’ll definitely be back ! Laura Z2023-08-03Verified Magical Experience. Magical experience. Super friendly and knowledgeable staff: CJ, Jeff, Bryant, and Tamara. Accommodations were excellent - comfortable, modern, clean. Couldn't have been better. Only complaint was that there was too much good food - LOL. wgjanko2023-07-26Verified A Perfect Adventure In general we had an exellent stay. Meals, accomodation and services were perfect. The every day tours on boat and by hiking to watch bears were always succesfull. We took a lot of top fotos and have seen many nice scenes of "bear behavior"! On the other hand, the price/performance level is challenging, too. mobear572023-07-22Verified Dreamy Bears Our 5 days at the Kodiak Bear Center was truly magical. Our guides Fallon and CJ were amazing and the food by Brian was unbelievable. We saw so many bears doing so many different things, we lost count. This place is a bear lover and a photographers dream. The entire staff made us feel like family and we are still floating from such a wonderful experience. Ruth D2023-07-20Verified Incredible experience We had the most amazing trip here at the start of the season. We did two boat trips a day to different points around the lake where we walked along trails or viewed bears from the water. The lake is beautiful and we were lucky to have days of bright sunshine. The lodge is so comfortable. The rooms are warm and spacious with a great shower. The communal room where meals are served is fantastic with huge windows so you can spot bears from inside. Bryant the chef is incredible and the food was delicious. The guides we had - CJ and Fallon - were really knowledgeable and also really fun. They made themselves available to answer any questions and we always felt safe. Fallon’s ability to spot bears from huge distances was unbelievable! We saw so many bears - fishing, swimming, climbing trees, sleeping and even trying to break into the garbage store at the camp. It was incredible to see them in their natural environment. The scenery and the other wildlife - foxes, eagles, deer - were also amazing. This was the trip of a lifetime that we now want to repeat Langhamr2022-09-14Verified Wonderful lodge & great bear viewing An amazing place. A brand new lodge created by the native corporation on an island in the middle of the refuge. Amazing facilities, rooms, lounge area. Kind, generous, helpful staff. Excellent equipment. Great chef & service. Highly recommended as a way to get into the backcountry in a luxury environment & see wildlife. Hiking & physical activity opportunities are limited but there is a little hiking required. James R2022-09-05Verified Aug Trip to KBBC - Awesome; Amazing Bear Viewing | Amazing People KBBC is spectacular. A float plane ride starts your adventure leaving the main town of Kodiak Island heading south. Mountains dressed in emerald green and rugged landscapes are your views, an hour later you are landing on Karluk Lake away from everyone. The Lodge is well appointed with magnificent views of the lake, mountains and Kodiak Bears. You are immersed in this untouched nature preserve your entire trip. Each day you go out for 2 - 3 hour bear viewing trips. You observe the majestic Kodiak Bears in their nature habit; eating, playing, sleeping along the rivers and lake. We saw Kodiak Bears on every trip out our week there. The people who manage and lead you through your time there are also fantastic. They were helpful at every turn, had dinner with us every evening, a pleasure to be around. The meals were outstanding as well. If that is not enough the cabins/accommodations are excellent. Well appointed cabins with all you need to rest, clean up and continue to take in the breathtaking views. Its simply a once in a lifetime trip. We highly recommend you to go KBBC. Steve S2022-08-24Verified Awesome family stay at KBBC Our family of 5 had an amazing experience at the KBBC. Facilities are first class, meals were delicious (Chef Bryant's presentation was flawless) and Jeff and his team went above and beyond to exceed our every expectation. Oh and the bears were unbelievable!!! We saw over 20 bears in our 3 night 4 day stay! Guides Brock, Russ and Falon were very knowledgeable and engaging, yet always had an eye out for safety...especially when we had to share the trail with a bear or two. Seeing the Kodiak Brown Bears in their natural environment fishing for salmon is undoubtedly a top 5 lifetime experience. Two huge thumbs up 👍 👏 worldtraveller992022-08-13Verified Lovely trip with great bears and wonderful food We had a great trip to the Kodiak Brown Bear Center. The lodge is smashing, with nice chalet rooms and Bryant the chef is brilliant! Lots of imaginative food, plus we really enjoyed the Smores evening - a first for us! Re the bears, they are not habituated, which means they were either far from us or running towards us (once) and the guides / guards had to frighten them away! A bit nerve-wracking! Though we did have 2 different bears come through the lawn of the lodge but again they didn't hang around (probably for the best). So I would recommend having a big 400mm lens (which we didn't have). We saw good bear viewing 2 days out of 4, and with the 2 rainy days there were midges. Do not believe they don't bite - they do, so put on the head net they give you. I didn't bother and have bites on my face. Otherwise it was an enjoyable and memorable experience, and the other guests (only 6 people, maximum 8) and the staff were lovely to chat to.
“Between the amazing bears and attentive staff, I can't imagine having a more exceptional experience! It's been a couple of weeks now and I am still reveling in the experience that was hands down one of the best of my life! From the air service crew and pilot to the five staff who took such wonderful care of my travel companion and me, it was PERFECT! AND THE BEARS! Words cannot express how delighted I was to sit and watch these majestic creatures for hours! It could not have been a more perfect experience!”

"KBBC has the best facilities we have ever experienced. The cabins and new gathering room were beautiful. Our cabin was super private. We had jaw-dropping panoramic views of Karluk Lake and the surrounding mountains from our cabin and it was well-appointed with a coffee pot, good WiFi, etc. We watched countless bears walk along the banks of the Karluk Lake from the spotting scope in the gathering room."
