Sauna / Banya

At the Kodiak Brown Bear Center, we are proud to offer our guests an authentic Alutiiq steam bath experience, known locally as a banya or maqiwik. A steam bath is a traditional practice deeply rooted in Alutiiq culture, providing both physical and spiritual cleansing.

Nestled on the serene shores of Karluk Lake, our maqiwik invites guests to immerse themselves in this timeless tradition, offering a unique way to relax and rejuvenate amidst the natural beauty of Kodiak Island.

Sauna / Banya

Although you are in one of the most remote places on earth, our guests still have access to all of the comforts of home. Each cabin has its own private deck overlooking Karluk Lake.

Our cabins have electricity, full bathroom facilities, wireless internet access, and comfortable beds with fresh linens. Delicious meals prepared by our talented and friendly staff are just a short walk away in our dining cabin.

The “banya” at Kodiak Brown Bear Center is meticulously crafted to reflect the rich heritage of the Alutiiq people. Historically, steam baths were central to community life, serving as places for bathing, healing, and socializing. Our maqiwik experience honors these traditions, creating a space where guests can not only cleanse their bodies but also connect with the cultural practices of the Indigenous people of Kodiak.

Our culinary style is classic Alaskan fare, which highlights locally caught salmon and halibut with fresh vegetables. We also feature traditional American entrees that include beef, chicken, pork, vegetables, potatoes or rice, and bread. Don’t forget to leave room for our creative and decadent desserts!

All meals are included in your stay, and breakfast, lunch and dinner are served family style in the gathering room we call “The Bear Cave”, overlooking a spectacular view of Karluk Lake and the surrounding mountains. It is not uncommon to observe four-legged explorers on the lawn outside while you enjoy your meal.

The combination of exquisite cuisine, stunning views, and a rich sense of community makes the Bear Cave an essential part of the lodge’s charm, ensuring every stay is both memorable and enriching.
